It’s an annoying problem that plagues many large organizations: multiple applications connected to one business platform often require multiple log-ins, one for each application.

End users are frustrated by the inconvenience, IT has a hard time managing and protecting the IDs, and everyone wastes time and effort.

That’s where Identity Access and Management (IAM) comes in. A good IAM system offers a few important features:

Single Sign-On (SSO) so businesses can streamline user access across multiple applications and systems.

Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) features that allow businesses to manage customer identities at scale.

Because CI&T works with so many large B2B enterprises, we run into the IAM issue all the time. As a result, we set out to build the single biggest B2B IAM system in the world, one with global reach that could serve five million people, addressing the multiple log-in problem for a wide array of applications.

The project began with Microsoft Azure Active Directory B2C,

which we had leveraged many times before. Our task was to extend its capabilities, using DevOps techniques to accelerate the efficiency of the Azure AD solution. By understanding the Azure AD B2C boundaries and creating customizations, we found we could build a single code base that could be deployed in any country, positioning Azure as the back end.

The resulting IAM is fast and as customizable as it needs to be

to account for local compliance rules and security regulations, but it remains eminently scalable and can help businesses ramp up new applications faster than ever before. It can even extend from B2B to B2C, bringing an entirely new set of users into a company’s ecosystem.
